Buckey The Fighting Orca Whale

Posted by Leigh - January 10th, 2008

I have to go to the DMV like right now. Here's a Lobster Quest character, sort of a big part of the story but not exactly a main character. His name is Buckey, he's an Orca, and he's a champion. Originally I drew this character as a Great White Shark, and he was going to fight an Orca in a boxing match. But when I drew the Orca he turned out way cooler than the shark. The boxing match will still be between a Great White and an Orca, but the focus will be on the Orca rather than the Great White. Which makes sense because an Orca would kick a Great White's ass in real life anyway.

Fucking Lobster Quest god dammit.

Hey thanks a lot man. Some day...

For real, that whale..he reminds me of a game I played when I was younger, the whale was like rambo haha.

I really cant wait for this game :)

I just gotta say this. You haven't done anything on NG big yet, but when you do, you will humble the fuck out of all of us.

I've never met you, but you are incredible. you not only show signs of talent, but signs of genius. I've never been so enamored and so jealous of someone in my life.
My only wish is that you finish stuff.
You Drew better at 16 than I did in my 20s. The only thing missing from you is conviction.

You just flattered the pants off me. I just finished a piece I've been working on for a couple of weeks, but my scanner is broken. I showed Stamper the pencil version, here:

I blew that up to 14 x 17 and finished it in Prismacolor markers and colored pencils. But my scanner is fucking broken and leaves yellow streaks across the image. So now I have to find another way to digitize the finished product.

I think Illustration and live media is a much more manageable medium than working digitally for me at this point. I'm still very productive in that respect. It's immediately satisfying. I have a lot of big ideas, mainly Lobster Quest, that I am eager to manifest digitally, but I'm sick of my tiny graphics tablet and I'm sick of how long it takes to do anything in Adobe Illustrator. Because I have to work at an office 3 days a week and juggle a social life, the effort versus time ratio is often discouraging when working on LQ, or any other flash project. But then, I see a lot of people here on NG putting out a lot of work, so I may be just bitching. Quite honestly, I don't know how they do it.

No one knows how badly I want to make Lobster Quest a reality, but it has taken me a long time to find strategies toward making that happen, and I'm still developing those strategies. Working alone on a massive project like this is a daunting task and isn't as immediately expressive as the rest of my work, so I've spent a lot of time tackling how to actually manage all my ideas and develop a production process. I'm the only one responsible for this struggle, but in short I don't quite know what I'm doing when it comes to producing a full length adventure video game on my own, or for that matter, anything that requires the amount of attention as my ideas for flash projects. This is most likely due in part to my reluctancy to downsize said ideas into realistically achievable tasks.

Thank you for being honest. I love your work, fucking love it. NG Rumble blew me away. Everybody over there produces top notch shit. I'm not just trying to return a compliment, I really like everything NG is doing, and love seeing how far it's come. There is quite a nest of exceptional talent under Tom Fulp's great nurturing wing.

ur right da orcawud win in da boxin match
